Gajjar was born in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, on 4 December 1963. Her father, Kantilal Gajjar, was a businessman, and her mother, Shantaben Gajjar, was a homemaker. She has two brothers and a sister. She did her schooling at St. Xavier’s High School, Ahmedabad, and graduated in commerce from Gujarat University in 1984.
In 1986, Gajjar married Mahesh Gajjar, a businessman. The couple has two sons, Jai and Kunal.
Gajjar began her career as a lecturer in commerce at Gujarat University. She later joined her family business, Sarabhai Chemicals, where she worked for 10 years. In 2000, she co-founded the Sarabhai Foundation with her husband. The foundation works for the development of women and children in rural areas of Gujarat.
